Manuel Antionio National Park, with its 1700 acres of land mass and 135,906 acres of reserve, is tvhe smallest of the 20 national parks Costa Rica has put aside for total protection. Even so, it is the countrys second most visited conservation area, after the Poas Volcano located in Alajuela.
Last year alone, 143,520 tourists visited Manuel Antonio National Park. On Mondays Manuel Antonio National Park is closed to the public. Located 1.30 hrs south of Jaco Beach, Manuel Antonio National Park in Quepos, which was declared a national park in 1972, is the natural habitat of species such as the endangered squirrel monkey (endemic to the area), white faced capuchin monkey, raccoons, three and two-toed sloths, white-nosed coaties, brown pelicans, black-collared hawks and green kingfishers. They share the space with primary and secondary forests, bursting with cedars, bully trees, locust sur, black locusts and silk cotton trees. A mangrove swamp covers about 44.5 acres, adding to the biodiversity of the region. Three different species: red mangrove, buttonwood mangrove and white mangrove - around.
This park is just south of Quepos on the Costa Rica Pacific Coast. Perhaps It is so popular because of its expensive white sand beaches backed by an evergreen forest that grows right up to the high tide line. The principal habitants are primary forest, secondary forest, mangrove swamps, lagoons and beach vegetation. There is quite a varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 of birds.
Manuel Antonio National Park contains a charming combination of rain forest, beaches and coral reefs. Manuel Antonio beaches are the most beautiful in the country, lined with lush forest, and the snorkeling is excellent too. The Rainforest is home for sloths, iguanas, the rare and adorable squirrel monkeys and millions of colorful little crabs.
